Descendants of Rev Joseph Qualtrough and Agnes McCullock

- Mary Qualtrough (Prest)

John Prest & Mary Ann Thorburn Qualtrough (born 1859 died 1934), d/o James Qualtorugh and Lydia Howe Thorburn.

Ships arriving from overseas had to drop anchor in Hobson's Bay, or at the Sandridge (Port Melbourne) Pier. Passengers and goods then had to be transhipped up the river in smaller vessels or 'lighters' as they were called. These charged excessive amounts. It has been recorded that it cost 30 shillings per ton (half the entire freight costs for the voyage from England) to have goods taken the eight miles from sea to city, and the average delay in 1858 was three weeks.

MARY QUALTROUGH was born 1859 in Victoria, Australia. She married JOHN PREST 1882 in Melbourne, Vic, Australia. The Prests were fishermen from Liverpool and lived in a fishermans shack (hut) on the sand at Fishermans Bend, Port Melbourne area.

The shack was pulled down to build the first Tasmanian ferry pier.

She was buried as Mary Ann Thorburn on 17 December 1934, Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Victoria, Australia
